Local guide
Everything we'd tell a friend visiting for the first time — restaurants, bars, sightseeing, and the best day trips in northern Albania, all mapped out for you.
A quick note before you dive in: these are personal suggestions from us as locals of Vau i Dejës. Don't let them limit your plans, and feel free to explore beyond this list too. We may have missed a place here and there, but this should give you a solid starting point — and you can always ask us on WhatsApp for anything else.

Eat
This is our top recommendation for a real nature-set meal. Traditional Albanian food, up in the mountains, with freshly handpicked herbs and vegetables, meat straight from the village, and a little river where you can go for a swim afterwards. No fish on the menu, but you won't miss it.
A stunning lake view paired with modern, genuinely good food — definitely worth the short drive out. Unlike some of our other picks, they do serve fish here.
One of Albania's most celebrated agritourism restaurants, and worth the slightly longer drive. Everything is traditional and largely grown on their own farm, served in a small, warm village setting. No fish, but everything else more than makes up for it.
In the village of Mjedë — pizza, fish and meat, plus a small hotel attached if you need to stay over.
Drink
The best coffee in town, in our opinion — and there's a small museum inside too, which surprises most first-time visitors. Family-run, and they can even arrange pickup if you need it.
This is really an area as much as a single bar — the lake access point we send almost every guest to once summer arrives. Go for a swim, watch the sunset, and grab a drink at one of the small bars along the shore. Nice music, good coast, and the crowd tends to be relaxed.
A late-night spot, good for watching a match — lively, but honestly not really the family option.
Sweets, desserts and good coffee — a nice one for families, just a few steps from the building.
A coffee bar that also serves grilled meat, right in the town centre.
Quick bite
All within a minute or two of your apartment.
A brand new pizzeria, right around the corner.
You won't find better cevapi in your life. It only runs roughly 8am–12pm, and sometimes closes even earlier, so get there in good time.
Quick, casual pizza right in the centre.
Another good fast-food option, steps from the building.
Groceries
Everything you need is within a couple minutes' walk.

See
Honestly, this is the first thing we recommend to every guest. It's a beautiful walk up to the lake, absolutely worth it for the view alone, and you can jump in for a swim once you're there.
Not to be forgotten alongside the town's cathedral: the Church of Danja, about a 6-minute drive away, carries deep history — it was destroyed during communism and later rebuilt. For hikers, continue up to the ruins of Kalaja e Danjës (Danja Castle) and Kisha e Shën Markut; it's a bit of a hike, but it's believed our hero Skanderbeg was married there.
On the way to Lumi i Shalës and Koman, stop by Gomsiqe — a small village with the Gomsiqe river running through it. There's also a restaurant here with a lovely story of its own, run by two brothers who returned home after years of emigration.
City trip
Even though Vau i Dejës is a city in its own right, Shkodër is well worth the short drive. Summer nights here are a completely different vibe, with the pedestrian street and the warm colours of the old town — and it's never too hot to enjoy it properly after dark.
The liveliest neighbourhood in Shkodër at night — a great place to start your evening.
Our recommendation for a proper fish dinner while you're in Shkodër.
A hilltop fortress with sweeping views over Shkodër and its three rivers — a must for any first visit.
The pedestrian street running through the heart of Shkodër, right by the Bashkia — the best spot for an evening walk, a coffee, and people-watching.
Just outside Shkodër, on the shore of Lake Shkodra — a nice, quieter lakeside stop with a few small beach spots.
Coast
For the seawater lovers, we'd point you toward Velipojë or Shëngjin first. If you want a bit more peace, try Rrjoll, Rana e Hedhun, or the Tale/Kunë area instead.
⚠️ Be aware of midday traffic heading to Velipojë, Shëngjin, or Rana e Hedhun — we mean it, plan around it if you can.
Mountains
This is what we recommend to anyone who truly loves nature — the views are spectacular, the air is fresh, and you won't forget what you'll see. Fair warning: it's tiring, so plan for a full day (or more).
The gateway to it all. From here, take the ferry toward Lumi i Shalës or continue on to Valbonë.
One of the most beautiful places in Albania, full stop. Crystal-clear water, reached by driving to Koman and continuing by boat. We recommend this to absolutely everyone.
For the real nature lovers: take the Koman ferry to Valbonë, then hike from Valbonë to Theth. Theth itself can also be reached directly by road (about 2.5 hours), passing through the pretty village of Bogë along the way. Tiring, yes — but you won't regret it.
